Target Line

An important point to make in regard to alignment is the meaning of the "target line," or an imaginary line between the golf ball and the intended target (the pin, the fairway, etc.). This is the key line that we will refer back to many times, so it is important to understand what it is. If I am planning to hit a shot perfectly straight, then my ball flight would fly directly over that line all the way to the target. If my typical ball flight is a slight draw, then my shot will head out to the right of the target line and then work its way back towards it. In order to accomplish this, my clubhead must approach the ball from inside the target line (on the "body side" of the line). In my opinion this is the best way to swing a club because it allows the club to work efficiently and effectively.

So when I speak about the target line, this is what I mean. However, once we have set our feet in place and are aligned properly, we need to focus more on the line on which we would like to swing our clubhead (ideally slightly to the right of the target line). This helps us focus on properly swinging the club, and makes it easier to hit quality shots. Use the target line to help set your body in place as you take your stance, but then focus on swinging the club. This will help us play our best, most consistent golf.
