Coral Canyon, St. George, UT

One of my favorite courses in the Mesquite/St. George area is definitely Coral Canyon (Coral Canyon). In my opinion, it is a wonderful mix of long and short holes, playability with challenge and trouble, and high-quality without an attitude. Coral canyon is a true desert course, with large fairways and desert on both sides of the hole. There are no shots that demand perfection if you choose the conservative play, but there are plenty of opportunities to take a little risk in an effort to reap the rewards.

Several examples of this come to mind, beginning with the 5th hole, a beautiful downhill par 4. I played a hybrid 3 off the tee and had a big fairway to land it in. Had I chosen driver, I would have had to hit it through a narrow gap which was only about 5 steps across. It would have left me with only a chip shot to the green, but hitting the hybrid only left a short wedge anyways so I took the conservative route this time. However, on the short 8th hole, I drove the green by hitting my best drive of the week through a small opening between bunkers and desert to the right. I could have hit an easy iron off the tee, but this time chose the driver and got my reward with a two-putt birdie. Even the 9th hole offers the choice to bite off as much of the corner as you want, but be certain if you bite off too much you are in a wash and are likely going to have to take a stroke or two just to get it back in play.

Fortunately, the carts are equipped with a very good GPS system enabling you to make good decisions and play to your strengths. Most of the course is very visible when standing on the tee, but anytime there are questions I referred to the GPS and was easily able to know where to play my shot. The conditions were pretty good overall – the fairways were firm and somewhat dormant, but the greens were quick and pretty true for a course that gets a lot of play. And probably my favorite aspect is the lack of houses on the course. There are a few to the left of the 18th hole, but they are way out of play and not a factor at all.

No question Coral Canyon will get a return trip from me. Our group had a great time, the pace of play was very good, and there are some great holes out there.
